Last weekend (Saturday 3 December 2011), AFC Uckfield secured a 5-2 victory against Shoreham FC after defeats in the last two league games. A game that offered plenty of goals, the final score made the trip to Middle Road worthwhile. The first half saw plenty of chances and free kicks for both sides, but it was AFC Uckfield who scored first, thanks to Andrew McDowell. McDowell followed this performance with another goal 13 minutes later, making the score 2-0 to AFC Uckfield with 15 minutes of the first half still to play. In these 15 minutes, Shoreham fought to bring the score to 2-2, thanks for goals from John Kilgarriff and Charlie Walker. However, just before the half-time whistle, AFC Uckfield scored another thanks to Drew Greenall. Half-time score: 2-3. In the second half, Shoreham failed to fight back sufficiently, and AFC Uckfield secured a further two goals. Final score: 2-5 to AFC Uckfield. Photo: Steven Depolo

Uckfield charity, International Animal Rescue, has begun working on rescuing malnourished bears kept in zoos in India. After the practice of dancing bears in the streets was ended in India a couple of years ago, many of the bears ended up living in poor conditions in zoos. Two years ago, the team from International Animal Rescue, went to India to save the dancing bears from the streets and with the help of Wildlife SOS, the charity’s Indian partners, in 2009 the barbaric practice was ended. Now that they have successfully stopped this cruel tradition, which has been going on for hundreds of years, the charity has turned its attention to bears living in cramped cages in Indian zoos. There are 198 zoos in India and at least half of them contain captive sloth bears. Once they are rescued from their horrendous conditions the bears are put into quarantine in order to make sure they are free of disease. Once they have been in quarantine for three months, they are then released into socialisation enclosures where they meet other bears. Most of the bears under the care of International Animal Rescue, have been horrifically abused during their lives and it does take time for them to adjust to their new surroundings and to learn to trust the people caring for them. After spending time socialising with other bears and having been pronounced fit by vets and keepers, they are then released into the wider forested area. There they have the freedom to roam among the trees and they can behave as they would in the wild, but within the safety of the sanctuaries. The bears also have access to dens built out of local stone to give them shelter from the heat of the day and they can also play and cool off in the bathing pools. Speaking about the work the charity has done, Alan Knight, Chief Executive of International Animal Rescue, said: “I was very moved by the sight of the two bears when they arrived at our rescue centre. They were very weak and emaciated after all the years of neglect. But they couldn’t be in better hands: our vets will give them all the treatment and care they need to build up their strength and restore them to health." This charity really is working wonders around the globe. Next they are looking to follow up their success in India by wiping out bear dancing from the streets of Nepal. International Animal Rescue doesn’t only work with bears; they have saved orangutans, turtles, birds and have helped with many animal rights campaigns. The charity couldn't carry out all of this wonderful work without the help of its supporters, Alan Knight knows this better than anyone and he said: “We’re extremely grateful for all the local support we receive for the bear rescue project. There are many wonderful people in the area who give up their time to rattle our collection tins, take part in sponsored activities or hold their own fundraising events. "Several local schools have also raised money for the bears. Even though times are tough, our local supporters haven’t let us down. While there are bears in India that are suffering, we will continue to help them and I hope we can count on the public to continue giving us the means to do so.” For more information on the work of the charity and to find out how to make a donation, go to the International Animal Rescue website today. This week, just in time for the festive film season, Martin Scorsese’s first venture into the family adventure genre comes to the Uckfield Picture House. Hugo, Scorsese’s first ever 3D film, is based on Brian Selznick’s award-winning New York Times best-seller ‘The Invention of Hugo Cabret’. Hugo, a 12-year-old orphan lives in the walls of a Paris train station in 1930. The film tells the story of Hugo’s adventure as he tries to solve the mystery that involves himself, his late father and the robot he was working on before his death. In his quest to unlock the secret left to him by his father, Hugo finds a friend in Isabelle, who has the key to help him get the robot working. The cast of Hugo is as impressive as you would expect from a Scorsese epic, even though this is a thriller based as a family audience. Asa Butterfield, star of The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, plays Hugo, whilst Chloe Moretz plays Isabelle. Also on board are British stalwarts Sacha Baron Cohen, Ben Kingsley and Ray Winstone. Catch Hugo at the Uckfield Picture House from Friday 2 December 2011. For all the latest Uckfield cinema listings, head over to our Uckfield What’s On pages.
